Dates: 11-15 February 2002 in Bergen, Norway (course website).

Arranged in corporation with Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration

Lecturer: Professor Frank Asche, The School of Science and Technology Stavanger University College, Norway

Course content:
During the last two decades the development of intensive or industrial production methods has changed the aquaculture industry dramatically. The most important factor is most likely that the new production methods have allowed a substantial productivity growth. This has allowed a large increase in production, and aquaculture products have found a number of new markets. However, the introduction of aquaculture products into new markets has been far from unproblematic. As established producers have perceived aquaculture products to be competing goods, a number of complaints have been raised, and where trade has crossed borders, trade conflicts have often followed. In this course we will look at markets for aquaculture products from an empirical and theoretical point of view and look at the two most common methods to obtain information about these markets empirically, namely demand analysis (e.g. AIDS) and relationships between prices (e.g. cointegration). During the course, the students will be given the opportunity to carry out empirical exercises using these approaches. A large share of the world’s aquaculture production is exported. This has led to a number of trade conflicts. We will review parts of international trade theory relevant for these issues to give insights why the trade conflicts occur and how one can use results from demand analysis and relationships between prices to discriminate between different arguments.
