MAST - Research School for Studies in Marine and Coastal Environment, Heritage and Sustainable Tourism

(former: MARINERS – Maritime History and Marine Environmental Research School)

MAST is a multi-disciplinary research school in the theme of human interaction with the coasts and seas, with the overarching theme of coastal community development. MAST is a network and research school with the purpose of training historians and archaeologists in marine environmental history.

The field of environmental history has, in general, grown rapidly in the last decade or two, and demand is rising for historians with interdisciplinary training and experience in working with naturel scientists. However the history of the sea, and in particular the interaction of humans and marine life, has so far been neglected.

The school is organised in four research columns, each with a key supervisor as head of activities.

The columns are

  • Coastal Community Development
  • Marine resource impacts and valuation
  • Globalisation and maritime industries
  • Tourism and cultural research

All columns encompass both basic and applied research, and the school has strong partnerships with both public agencies and private business. The main academic disciplines involved are history, archaeology, and social anthropology but other disciplinary approaches are welcomed if they contribute to the research agenda.

MAST builds on the successful completion of MARINERS, which was supported by the Danish Council for Research Training in 2001-2004. The proposed name change reflects the fact that studies in sustainable tourism and leisure management has developed as a strong new agenda for the research school.
