Teaching Methods
The programme comprises keynote lectures, workshops, discussions in pleno, seminars, and visits. Each day is structured according to a basic pattern:
A keynote lecture (30 minutes) introduces the theme of the day. This is followed by a response (15 minutes) by a lecturer from a different discipline. The purpose of this session is to juxtapose the perspectives of historians, ecologists and biologists on ocean sustainability over the ages.
Workshops: four simultaneous workshops, each led by two lecturers, address questions set by the keynote lecturer. The composition of the workshop groups changes each day.
Discussion in pleno: the workshops report their findings to the group as whole.
Seminars: students will present papers (20 minutes) on their research projects in two parallel sessions. The composition of the groups remains unchanged, with different lecturers attending each day.
Visits to appropriate venues take place on two days each week.
