Oceans Past: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the History of Marine Animal Populations

This conference is part of the Census of Marine Life project, and is sponsored by the History of Marine Animal Populations project that , Head of MARINERS, is involved with. The focus is on developments in historical marine ecology and marine environmental history.

 

Oceans Past

Oceans Past invites researchers from the natural sciences and humanities to discuss how and why the diversity, distribution and abundance of marine life in the world's oceans changes over the long term, and the role that humans have played in this dynamic process.

The conference will greatly add to what is known, what is unknown but discoverable, and what is unknowable about ocean life in the past.

 

Call for papers

Proposals for papers and posters to be presented at the conference should be submitted by 15 February 2005 using the online form at http://www.hmapcoml.org/Default.asp?ID=248 or via email to .

Proposals should comprise a brief CV and a 300-word (max.) abstract of the paper (in English). The conference programme will be structured according to the following ocean realms:

  • coastal waters and inshore habitats
  • continental shelves
  • pelagic
  • deep sea
  • diadromous life

and approaches:

  • climate change
  • interaction between human and marine animal communities
  • changes in extraction technologies
  • management implications
  • comparative aspects across regions

Proposals will be selected according to their originality, scholarly significance, and relevance to the aims of the Conference.

Authors are expected to attend the Conference to present their papers.
