Whaling was a new maritime activity in the Dutch Republic that was always strongly connected with the agrarian and industrial economy ashore. Climatical changes and a patent forced entrepreneurs to open sea flensing. From a source of wild speculation whaling altered into a regular business, in which more than 200 annual expeditions became rather the rule than the exception. Decline was unavoidable in the latter part of the 18th century. The Dane Schimmelmann played a, though minor, role in this process.
