500 years ago the historical pendulum swung from east towards west. Europe discovered a world of rich civilizations, where culture and raw materials far exceeded the Europeans'. But Europe’s gunpowder, ships and silver became a major challenge for the Orient. At the same time Europe’s own fundament was in crisis between Islam and Christianity, and soon after a change inside Christianity itself between the reformation and counterreformation. The years around 1500 laid the course for the world history of the next centuries. What were the choices, how conscious of them was that age, who made the choices and could it have gone differently.
