European Fisheries Management is in serious trouble, with depleted fish stocks, lack of legitimacy and poor economic efficiency. Despite the fact that in the North Atlantic area management has been developing through the last hundred years towards knowledge-based management, the system is nevertheless seen as a role model for management of nature resources. The talks will draw attention to that paradox, by looking at how the management of fisheries in the North Atlantic area has developed in close interaction with the biological research and the mangement institutions. This has developed into a management paradigm that is unable to handle the challenges of the fisheries.
Anne-Sofie Christensen, ethnographer.
Through the past decades there has been conflict between fishermen and management. The talks will draw attention to the key issues: What is the conflict between on one side the politicians and the biologists, and on the other side the fishermen. And why is this conflict reproduced over time.
Both speakers are from the Institute for Fisheries Management and Coastal Community Development.
