Programme:

Professor Jeffrey Bolster from University of Southern Denmark, Odense.

Cultural and technological transformations remade the New England
fisheries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This talk begins to explore the meaning of fishing in New England in light of environmental and cultural history, making the case that historians of New England should no longer ignore the changing nature of the marine environment and its resources. The lecture relies on literature, fine arts, contemporary work on environmental history, and HMAP's pioneering research on cod stocks and overfishing during the nineteenth century.
