The Cod Wars:
British Naval Operations off Iceland
during the Cod Wars 1958 to 1976
The talk will briefly address the political and diplomatic context of the three Cod Wars between the United Kingdom and Iceland (1958-1961, 1973 and 1975-1976) in which two NATO members resorted to the threat and at times the actuality of violence in support off economic interests. It will discuss naval operations in more detail including tactics and techniques and will conclude with a reflection on maritime constabulary operations generally. The talk will draw on unpublished material from British Royal Navy archives.
